MOOOOOOOOOOM, Phineas and Ferb are teaming up with the NHL!
Yes, you read that correctly. The news was released today at the 2011 NHL Exchange licensed products and retail trade show inside the Air Canada Centre in Toronto. The league was happy to announce a new merchandise deal with Disney Consumer Products concerning Disney’s Phineas and Ferb cartoon show. Join Phineas, Ferb, Perry, Candice, and all the characters as they work their way into an NHL adventure kids could get excited about. According to the press release, the collection will be coming to a store near in time for the 2011-12 season:
“The Disney and the NHL collection will include apparel, headwear, house & home products and collectibles featuring characters from Phineas and Ferb wearing NHL and team-branded merchandise. NHL and Disney licensees will deliver the new products to retail stores throughout North America in fall 2011, just in time for the new school year and the 2011-12 NHL season.”
Moments after the news broke,
the jokes started to spread with Corey Perry, the Anaheim Ducks, Gary Bettman, and the “whatcha dooin” phrase but all joking aside; I think it will prove to be a great deal for the NHL. They need to maximize their viewership by any means necessary in the next year. In a year where both the NFL and NBA are experiencing league problems, it has become now or never for the NHL. You can also look at this deal as a back door entry to work with Disney (who owns ESPN/ABC). Having Disney distributing products with the NHL crest can be a positive step forward in maintaining Disney-NHL relations. It also smoothes over the fan base after the polarizing comic book character deal last season. I don’t think there will be such a negative outcry from this deal.
For those that are looking for instant gratification on the issue, the NHL & Disney did release a sample t-shirt for you to argue over. On the shirt, both of the main characters are decked out on All-Star jerseys from this past year. There is also a discolored NHL crest on the top left chest plate. I’m sure as the merchandise begins to hit the stores the imagery will change.
Is this a good deal? Bad deal? Not a fan of the secret crime-fighting platypus? Personally, I’m waiting to see if Dr. Doofenshmirtz makes a cameo on a live national broadcast. But Isn’t that a bit young for the TV audience? Why no, no it isn’t.
